Can someone let me know how the update is compared to the previous 'design'? If it's better or worse or not much different?
it's not much different.
personally i think some of the elements are less pretty (i liked the 3d renderings), but it's basically the same with some new features.

of course you could do like i do, i make a copy of my apps, and rename them with the version number so when i update the main app, i can still launch the older version if i want (i have several older versions stashed elsewhere, and move them around as needed)):
